Class Information for Summer Free: LEARNING TO PLAY CHESS, YES! 3:00 to 4:30 pm Thursday, August 2, 9 and 16, Palm Ridge Recreation Center, Acacia Room (SF212)
"Chess? Yes!" is a beginning chess class for people that have never played before or have not played in years. (Note: Experienced chess players would be bored silly.) Have fun learning the fundamentals of a game that you will enjoy for years to come and will check another item on your bucket list. You do not need to bring a chess set, his book Chess, Yes! is available at the SCW library. Once you learn the basics, new chess players are also welcome at the SCW library, Tuesdays from 2-3pm (kibitzing is encouraged) and experienced players do their thing at the SCW library, Fridays mornings from 9-Noon, where silence is encouraged.
Instructor Jerry Nicholson says that “I am a mediocre chess player, but I enjoy helping people learn the basics of chess.” He teaches chess to K-8 graders in the Nadaburg schools. Raised on a small Wisconsin family dairy farm, he did the USAF Cuban Missile Crisis thing, assembled Chevrolets, got BA at ASU, and was a software programmer in AZ for 33 years. He enjoys reading, teaching chess, being a posse volunteer and building robots.
